Classics

At the Classics department our research and teaching focus on the language, culture literature, history and thought of Greece and Rome. Classics students are trained to read literary texts in the original, with close attention to the range of linguistic, textual, historical and cultural features, in their synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Classics students are also exposed to non-literary sources -- epigraphic, papyrological and archaeological – and to areas of contact between the classical and other cultures, such as the Jewish culture of that period. The atmosphere in which we teach at our department is an intimate one, with personal supervision of each pupil by the teachers of the department. The department also promotes vibrant extra-curricular activity, including the departmental seminar, with contributions from excellent scholars and students, as well as field trips to archaeological sites from the classical period.
